Quick Answer
Can ATS read PDFs?
Yes — but only text-based PDFs. Image-based PDFs (scanned, Canva-exported, Photoshop) are invisible to most ATS engines.
✓ Text-based PDFs work
Exported from Word, Google Docs, Pages, LaTeX, or any tool that produces selectable text. Modern ATS engines (Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, Taleo, iCIMS) parse these reliably.
✗ Image-based PDFs fail
Scanned resumes, photos of resumes, exports from Canva/Photoshop/Figma where the text is rendered as graphics. ATS engines extract zero text from these — your application reaches the recruiter blank.
The 5-second test
- Open your PDF in any viewer (Adobe Reader, Chrome, Edge, Preview).
- Try to select text from a bullet point — click and drag your cursor over a few words.
- If individual words highlight in blue → your PDF is text-based ✅ ATS-safe.
- If nothing happens or the whole page selects as one block → your PDF is image-based ❌ ATS will see nothing.
What to do if your PDF is image-based
- If you have the source file (Word, Google Docs, Pages): re-export as PDF using "Save As → PDF" or "Export → PDF". The default settings produce text-based output.
- If you only have the scanned PDF: open it in Adobe Acrobat → Tools → "Recognize Text" → run OCR. This converts image text to selectable text. Quality depends on the scan resolution.
- If you built it in Canva: Canva has a "PDF Print" export option that's more text-friendly than "PDF Standard". Better still: copy the content into Word and re-export.
- Easiest fix: scrap the PDF, paste your content into Google Docs, format minimally, and export from Google Docs as PDF. Always text-based.
PDF vs. Word — which is better for ATS?
For most modern ATS engines (Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, iCIMS): both .docx and text-based PDF parse cleanly. If the application allows you to choose, .docx is slightly safer because:
- No risk of image-based vs. text-based confusion
- Older ATS engines (Taleo, some legacy systems) handle .docx better than PDF
- No font substitution issues if you stick to standard fonts
- Word format preserves real bold/italic vs. PDF approximations
That said: if the application form says "PDF only", submit a text-based PDF. There's no reason to send Word when PDF is requested.
