Most finance resumes — FP&A, M&A, audit, treasury, controllership — bury real impact behind boilerplate. We show you exactly what the ATS extracts and how to lead with the numbers that close interviews.

5 mistakes finance resumes commonly make

1. Listing duties instead of decisions

"Prepared monthly variance reports." "Reviewed budget vs actual." These describe ANY finance person's job. Replace with what YOU specifically decided or changed: "Identified $2M overspend in marketing through monthly variance review; recommended freeze that returned 1.2pp of EBITDA margin."

2. No dollars/AED on bullets that should have them

FP&A bullets that don't mention budget size, M&A bullets without deal value, treasury bullets without cash position. Hiring managers screen for SCALE — "managed budget" tells them nothing, "managed $40M annual budget across 3 BUs" positions you immediately.

3. Cramming credentials in a hard-to-parse header

"Tanzeel Sherazi, ACCA, CFA Level III, EMBA Candidate (LBS)" in a stylized header may not parse. Put credentials in body or after name in a clean line. ATS often strips headers entirely.

4. Missing Excel/financial-system keywords

JDs include specific tools — Hyperion, Oracle EPM, SAP, Workday, Power BI, Tableau, Anaplan. If you've used them, name them explicitly. Don't generalize to "financial software."

5. Using old-school 2-column resume templates

Finance candidates often inherit 'professional' templates with sidebar layouts. These were designed for human readers in the 1990s. Modern ATS engines don't handle them. Switch to single column, plain section headers, .docx format.
