ATS Resume Checker for Recent Graduates — Free Entry-Level Scan
Recent graduates often lose to candidates with weaker credentials simply because their resume doesn't parse. Free ATS scan plus templates for positioning internships, projects, and coursework when full-time experience is thin.
5 mistakes specific to first-job resumes
1. Leading with Education when work matters more
Once you have ANY internship or project, lead with that. Education becomes a section near the bottom. Most ATS engines also rank candidates by 'most recent work experience' — if that field is blank, you're filtered out automatically.
2. Listing courses as if they're work
"Coursework: Data Structures, Algorithms, Database Systems" in a 'Skills' section confuses parsers. Coursework belongs under Education or in a 'Relevant Coursework' subsection — not mixed with skills.
3. Project descriptions without metrics
"Built a music app with React." OK, what happened? Did anyone use it? "Built React music app with 3 friends; reached 200 users in college community within 8 weeks via Reddit launch" positions you as someone who SHIPS, not just codes.
4. GPA in wrong place / format
Above 3.5? Include it once, near the degree. Below 3.5? Leave it off. Don't put it in the header or as a separate line. The parser may misread it as a date or skill.
5. Multi-column 'creative' template
Recent grads often pick visually impressive Canva/Enhancv templates to compensate for thin experience. These almost universally fail ATS parsing. Choose boring single-column over visual flair — boring parses, visual gets you filtered.
How to write strong first-job bullets
You don't need full-time experience to have impact bullets. Internships, course projects, club leadership, freelance gigs all count — IF you frame them with outcomes.
Internship
Weak
"Helped the marketing team with social media posts."
Strong (PAR)
"Drafted 40+ social posts for B2B marketing team in 12-week internship; 3 posts hit team's top 10 engagement of 2024 (best ratio of any intern)."
University Project
Weak
"Built a web application using React for class."
Strong (PAR)
"Built React + Firebase study-group app for 200-student CS class; deployed to 60 active users; received A+ on capstone (top 5% of cohort)."
Club / Leadership
Weak
"Was president of the entrepreneurship club."
Strong (PAR)
"Led 35-member entrepreneurship club; doubled membership in 1 year; organized 6-event speaker series with founders from 3 startups (combined valuation $400M+)."
Hackathon / Competition
Weak
"Participated in a coding hackathon."
Strong (PAR)
"Placed 2nd of 60 teams at MIT 24-hour hackathon; built carbon-tracking app in Python + React; won $5K prize and 1 of 3 demos selected for follow-up VC pitch."
