How BambooHR ATS Reads Your Resume — and How to Pass It

BambooHR is the SMB HR-tech standard — common at US companies under 500 employees and across SaaS-native organizations. Modern, forgiving parser with one critical quirk around contact extraction.

What is BambooHR?

BambooHR's recruiting module is built on top of its core HRIS platform. It's heavily adopted by US SMBs that aren't quite at the scale to justify Greenhouse or Workday, plus a growing share of European startups. Its parser is more forgiving than Workday or Taleo but has specific patterns around contact extraction that trip up creative templates.

Companies using BambooHR

  • US tech companies under 500 employees not yet on Greenhouse / Lever
  • Fast-growing European SaaS startups
  • Professional services firms (boutique consulting, law, accounting)
  • Non-profits and small healthcare practices

How BambooHR parses your resume

Field-based extraction with confidence scores

BambooHR assigns a parse-confidence score to each extracted field (Name, Email, Phone, Current Title, Current Company). If confidence is below a threshold, the field shows as blank to the recruiter rather than as a low-quality guess.

Handles slight formatting variations well

Centered headers, mild font variations, and small layout differences are tolerated. Two-column layouts are still problematic but less catastrophic than in Workday.

Extracts hyperlinks from PDFs

Like Greenhouse, BambooHR pulls real hyperlinks (LinkedIn, portfolio, GitHub) from PDF anchor tags. Your URLs must be actual hyperlinks, not visible text only.

Common BambooHR parsing failures

Phone numbers in styled-contact bars get missed

If your contact info sits inside a colored bar with icon glyphs (📧 ☎️ 📍), BambooHR's parser sometimes fails to associate the phone number text with the phone field. Plain text 'Phone: +1 415-555-0142' is more reliably parsed.

Custom section labels fail extraction

'Career Highlights' instead of 'Experience', or 'Background' instead of 'Education', means the corresponding profile fields stay empty. Recruiter filters keyed off these fields will miss you.

Resume tips for BambooHR

  • Plain-text contact line near the top (Name / Email / Phone / Location / LinkedIn)
  • Standard section names: Experience, Education, Skills
  • Single-column layout
  • Real hyperlinks for portfolio and LinkedIn
  • Calibri, Arial, or Helvetica only
