The three rules these templates are built on
Answer the posting, not the genre. A cover letter is not an essay about yourself. It picks two or three requirements from the specific job and answers each with a real example and a number. Mirror the posting's exact wording honestly; that is also what recruiter searches match, as we showed in do ATS read cover letters.
One page, always. Three to four short paragraphs. The short/email version is three sentences and often outperforms a full page because it respects the reader's time.

Frequently asked questions
Do ATS systems read cover letters?
Many parse and store them, and recruiters can search that text, but keyword matching is applied far more heavily to the resume. Write the cover letter for the human reader and keep the format simple so the parse stays clean. We tested this in detail in our blog post on whether ATS read cover letters.

How long should a cover letter be?
Three to four short paragraphs, always under one page. Hiring managers skim; the short email version in this set is often enough when the application asks for a brief note.
Should the cover letter repeat my resume?
No. The resume proves what you did; the letter connects two or three of the posting's requirements to your strongest examples and says why this company specifically. Anything that could be pasted into another company's letter unchanged is filler.
